Gary_Rossington’s Biography

Rossington formed the band with his friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in the summer of 1964. Lynyrd Skynyrd gained popularity in 1973 with the release of his first album (Pronounced ‘leh-‘nérd’ skin -‘nérd) and his success «Free Bird».

His duties as rhythm guitarist and soloist have left many memorable passages in rock history, including “Tuesday’s Gone” or the slide of “Free Bird.” Rossington also composed the “Simple Man” guitar.

In September 1976, Rossington was involved in a car accident. He bought a new car and crashed into an oak tree. He drove under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The band was about to go on tour in a couple of days, but they had to postpone it because of the Rossington accident. Members of the band were disappointed by Rossington and fined him $ 5,000 for the delay he produced on the tour’s agenda. Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote the song “That Smell” based on the car accident and the influence of the effects of drugs and alcohol in Rossington. The song became a massive success among the fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd. After the incident, Van Zant realized how much drugs and alcohol were affecting the band and reinforced a strict role of ‘NO DRUGS / ALCOHOL’ during the group’s future tours.

Rossington was one of six members who survived the October 20, 1977, plane crash near Gillsburg, Mississippi that took the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, showgirl Cassie Gaines (Steve’s sister) ) and three other people. Despite breaking both arms, legs, ankles, wrists and pelvis, Rossington finally recovered from his wounds and played again (although with metal plates on his right arm and on one of his legs). p>

In 1980, Rossington co-founded The Rossington Collins Band with Allen Collins. The band released two albums before dissolving in 1982 after the death of Allen Collins’ wife, Kathy.

Rossington still plays with a reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd, being the only original member left in the band.

His side project, The Rossington Band, supported Lynyrd Skynyrd during his 1987-88 reunion tour. The Rossington Band has released the albums Returned to the Scene of the Crime in 1986 and Love Your Man in 1988.

He and his wife, Dale Krantz-Rossington, have two daughters, Mary and Annie. Rossington and his wife were unable to attend the Gimme Three Days Cruise in January 2007 due to illness. Gary had a heart problem that was successfully operated. He also suffers from severe leg pains since his 1977 plane crash.

Guitar maker Gibson released a Signature model dedicated to Rossington in 2002. It is an imitation of his original guitar, a 1959 Les Paul with ’57 Classic pickups, which includes reproductions of aging and its wear and tear. It is a limited edition of 250 units. The first 75 have the Brazilian rosewood fretboard; the rest have Indian rosewood fretboard.
