Nicholson began playing music as a teenager, participating in high school dances and veterans’ meetings. He went to the University of North Texas, where he formed a band. Later he played with Delbert McClinton. One of his first recordings was “Jukebox Argument”, sung by Mickey Gilley in the movie Urban Cowboy.
Nicholson moved to live shortly thereafter in Nashville, Tenn. During this period, he continued acting as a session guitar, playing for artists when Billy Joe Shaver and Guy Clark.
In 1983, he signed an editorial contract with Tree Publishing (now Sony / ATV Music Publishing), obtaining his first number one in 1984 with the song “That’s the Thing About Love”, recorded by Don Williams. He got another number one in 1993 with “One More Last Chance” recorded by Vince Gill.
Nicholson has recorded with a long list of musicians including Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Charley Pride, Gail Davies, Waylon Jennings, Graham Brown, Seth Walker and Montgomery Gentry.
He was nominated for the Nashville Composers Hall of Fame in 2006 and was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011. He also won several ASCAP awards.
He has produced records for The Judds, T. Graham Brown, Pam Tillis, Wynonna Judd and more, and continues to work at his family publishing company Nicholson Music Group and acts as his blues alter ego Whitey Johnson. < / p>
