Frank James Cooper , better known as Gary Cooper (Helena, Montana, May 7, 1901-Los Angeles, California, May 13, 1961), was an American actor of English descent. He won the Oscar award three times; the last one was granted in recognition of his entire career.

Gary Cooper’s Biography

The son of an English immigrant who became a judge of the Supreme Court of the State of Montana, worked with his parents at his ranch while attending school. Later, he entered Wesleyan College, Bozeman, to study agricultural technician, and at Grinnell University (Iowa State), where he studied art. He suffers a car accident that affects his hip. At that timeaspired to be a political cartoonist and attend the Art School of Chicago.

He abandons his studies and moves to Hollywood, where, in 1925, he debuts with La hora maldita (The Thundering Herd), shoots some shorts, and subsequently acts as a supporting actor in several westerns. Adopt the artistic name of Gary Cooper ; He wanted to call himself Frank Cooper but there was already another actor who used it.

In 1926 he is hired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with a salary of $ 50 per week, and gets his first major role in The Winning of Barbara Worth, directed by Henry King, which makes him one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. The MGM tries to retain him with a longer contract, but Cooper accepts the offer of the Paramount producer, economically very superior: 175 dollars a week.

The following year participates in the classic Alas, by William A. Wellman, where she seduces Clara Bow on and off the screen. The romance that she maintains with Clara Bow supposes the definitive push to her artistic career. In 1929, he stars in The Virginian (The Virginian), directed by Victor Fleming, becoming one of the first stars of sound film, with blockbuster and constant criticism: Morocco (with Marlene Dietrich), The streets of the city, Between The sword and the wall, The favorite woman, Wedding night or The secret of living.

In 1936, it was placed among the most box office actors, following the success of Three Bengali Lancers (The Lives of a Bengal Lancer). In 1944 he founded his own production company, International Pictures Inc., with which he produced and starred Casanova Brown and The Knight of the West (Along came Jones).

His great popularity was based on his sober and natural style when acting. He was tall and lanky, embodying better than anyone the “ideal American,” a man of integrity and chivalry.

He maintained a good friendship with Picasso and with Ernest Hemingway, with whom he coincided in the filming of Goodbye to Arms.

He was a member of the anti-communist association of actors Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. But despite having conservative ideas, he avoided exposing his colleagues during the famous Witch Hunt.

Although he had many romances, he only married once, with the actress Verónica Balfe. In particular, he maintained a strong relationship with the actress Patricia Neal, since they filmed together The spring (The Fountainhead), in 1949, an idyll that ended after the couple starred in the film The King of Tobacco (Bright Leaf, 1950), given that the actor’s wife refused to grant her a divorce.

In his impressive career he filmed at the orders of the best directors of each era: Clarence Brown, Frank Lloyd, Josef von Sternberg, Henry King, William A. Wellman, Frank Borzage, Lewis Milestone, Victor Fleming, Rouben Mamoulian, Ernst Lubitsch, Norman Z. McLeod, Stephen Roberts, Richard Boleslawski, Henry Hathaway, King Vidor, Frank Capra, Cecil B.
