Garretson Beekman Trudeau (New York, New York, July 21, 1948) is an American caricaturist. He is known to be the creator of the comic strip Doonesbury.

Garry Trudeau’s Biography

First years

Trudeau was born in New York, the son of Jean Douglas and Francis Berger Trudeau. Trudeau is the great-grandson of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, creator of the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium. He was raised in Saranac Lake (New York) and attended St. Paul’s School in Concord (New Hampshire). In 1966, he enrolled at Yale University, where he subsequently became a member of Scroll and Key. Although initially he wanted to study theater, Trudeau became interested in artistic direction. A drawing by Yale quarterback Brian Dowling for the Yale Daily News motivated the creation of a comic strip for the newspaper, Bull Tales, the predecessor of Doonesbury. Trudeau continued his graduate studies at the Yale School of Art, earning a master’s degree in graphic design in 1973.

In 1970, the creation of Doonesbury was syndicated by the Universal Press Syndicate. Currently, Doonesbury is syndicated to almost 1,400 newspapers and can be viewed online at the Slate magazine site.

Trudeau has received numerous awards for his work. In 1975, he became the first cartoonist to win the Pulitzer Prize. In 1990, he was a finalist for the same prize. In 1977, he was nominated for an Oscar for the best short film animated by The Doonesbury Special, a collaboration with John Hubley and Faith Hubley. The Doonesbury Special won the Jury Prize for best short film at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1978.

In addition to Doonesbury, Trudeau has also worked with Elizabeth Swados to write several plays such as Rap Master Ronnie and the musical Doonesbury). In 1998, Trudeau wrote the HBO miniseries Tanner ’88, directed by Robert Altman. In 2004, he wrote the sequel to this miniseries, titled Tanner on Tanner.
