Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (Colmar, August 2, 1834 – Paris, October 4, 1904), also known by the nickname of Amilcar Hasenfratz , was a sculptor Alsatian, known especially for being the author of the famous Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, which is located at the entrance to the port of New York, as well as the monumental Lion of Belfort, sculpted on a cliff to celebrate the heroic resistance of the city in the siege of 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War.
Frederic Bartholdi’s Biography
Born in Colmar on August 2, 1834, son of Jean Charles Bartholdi (1791-1836), prefecture councilor, and Augusta Charlotte, born Beysser (1801-1891), daughter of a mayor of Ribeauvillé. Of his four children, only the oldest would survive, Jean-Charles (lawyer-editor) and the youngest, Auguste. After the untimely death of his father, the wealthy mother decided to move to Paris, keeping the family house on rue des marchands, 30, which has housed the Bartholdi museum since 1922 (after being bequeathed to the city in 1907).
After his studies at the Louis-le-Grand Lyceum in Paris, Auguste Bartholdi obtained his baccalaureate in 1852. He then studied architecture at the national superior school of fine arts, as well as painting under the direction of Ary Scheffer in his Chaptal Street workshop. After a long and memorable trip to Egypt, he began his activity as an architect in Colmar, with his first monument, dedicated to General Rapp, in 1856.
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he was squad leader of the national guards and acted as an aide-de-camp to General Giuseppe Garibaldi and government liaison, particularly in charge of dealing with the needs of the Vosges army.
In 1871, at the request of Eduardo Laboulaye (of whom Bartholdi made a bust in 1866) and of the Franco-American Union, he made his first trip to the United States, in order to select in person the place where the famous one will be installed. The project had a great resemblance to another project of his consisting of a statue that would be placed at the entrance to the Suez Canal, if Ismail Pacha had accepted it in 1869.

He made his last trip to the United States on the occasion of the inauguration of the statue, on October 28, 1886, in New York.
As the creator of the Statue of Liberty, his career has since taken on an international dimension and made him one of the most celebrated sculptors of the 19th century throughout Europe and North America.
He was appointed commander of the Legion of Honor in 1882.
He died of tuberculosis on October 4, 1904 in Paris, and is buried in the cemetery of Montparnasse.
