Neil was born in Cleveland, Ohio, although he grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla. Since he was a child he was familiar with music due to the work of his father, a representative of jukeboxes. At the end of the 50s he moved to New York, where he dedicated himself to composition, working in the legendary Brill Building. At this time he composed some hit songs for rock and roll pioneers like Buddy Holly, for whom he wrote “Come Back Baby” in 1958 and Roy Orbison for whom he made “Candy Man” in 1961.

In mid-1961 he went to live in Greenwich Village, where he met Vince Martin, with whom he formed a duo that in 1965 published his first album Tear Down The Walls. At the beginning of the 70s he gradually stopped recording and acting, installed in the Florida Keys, devoted the rest of his life to the defense of the dolphins, and occasionally returned to the stage, as in 1975, when he participated at the Montreux Jazz Festival, along with his friend John Sebastian.

Fred Neil died in Summerland Key, Florida, on July 7, 2001 due to skin cancer.
