Frankie_Avalon’s Biography

When he was 9 years old, he aroused all his interest in the musical art world. He started as a trumpeter, and little by little his dream became becoming someone of the stature of Louis Armstrong or Harry James. He took classes with a musician from the Philadelphia symphony orchestra; and soon his ability takes him to Pery shows and to performances with Jackie Gleason, Ray Anthony and Paul Whitman.

Soon a contract to record was born, but at that time more vocalists were required than trumpet players, so their debut was singing “Dee dee Dinah”, however public recognition of their performances came with the songs “Venus”, number one on Billboard 1959 or … “Why”, another number one also in 1959 in addition to other performances like “Ponchinello” (Payasito).

Once reached its popularity, Frankie Avalon began a new stage in his career: the cinema. He debuted with “Fuego en el bosque”, along with Alan Ladd and Keanne Crain, but his real chance came when John Wayne offered him a role in the movie “El Álamo”, where he played “Salud por las Damas” and acted as the young man companion of David Crockett (John Wayne). After this film they followed others like “Trip to the bottom of the sea”, and “Navegue a loco boat”, with Robert Wagner, Dolores Hart and Carolyn Jones. And directed by William Asher, he starred with Annette Funicello in the series of beach movies: Muscle Beach Party in 1964, Bikini Beach in 1964 and Beach Blanket Bingo in 1965. He acted as a special presentation in the film set in the 50’s : Grease, Vaseline from 1977, where she appears as an angel and sings the melody “Beauty School Dropout” referring to a beauty salon.

Frankie Avalon was considered a “Pretty Face”, along with Paul Anka, Bobby Rydell, Johnny Tillotson or Jimmy Clanton among others.

On January 19, 1963, he married Kathryn Diebel, whom he met while playing cards at friends’ houses. Frankie told her friend that she was the girl she would marry. But his agent warned him not to marry, since the entire figure of “teen idol” would be ruined. Avalon ignored his advice, and today, still together, the couple has eight children, by order of age are, Frankie Jr., Tony, Dina, Laura, Joseph, Nicolas, Kathryn and Carla.

His name is mentioned in the Old School Hollywood songs of System Of A Down and Teenage Icon by The Vaccines.
