A South Bronx native, Hughes studied jazz composition at Berklee University of Music in Boston before making his feature film debut with Robert Celestino’s True Convictions (1991). Since then he has acted in several films, such as Bad Boys (1995) with Will Smith, Lonely in America (1991), The Funeral (1996) with Benicio del Toro and Christopher Walken, Layin ‘Low (1996), Mr. Vincent (1997) (for which he would get great acclaim from the public at the Sundance Film Festival for his role as John Vincent), Urban Jungle (1999), Robbers (2000), Anacardium (2001) (for which he won the award of best actor at the New York Independent Film Festival) and Steven Spielberg’s movie Atrápame si puedes (2002) with Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio.
He will soon participate in Robert Celestino Yonkers Joe’s film along with Chazz Palminteri and Christine Lahti and in Jon Avnet’s film Righteous Kill along with actors like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
In addition to his film performances, Hughes is a recurring guest star on several television series. The most recent was in The Sopranos as Walden Belfiore, a soldier of the Soprano family, who commits the historic “ultimate homicide” in the series when he kills Lupertazzi boss Phil Leotardo.
Hughes also enjoyed international recognition for his portrayal of “Wild Bill” Guarnere in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers (2001) which won both the Golden Globe Award and the Emmy Award for Best Miniseries.
Hughes also starred in the Dick Wolf Players series (1997) and LAX for NBC. Other appearances include Cover Me (recurring), Law & amp; Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, Feds, Without a Trace, Monk, Boomtown, Kings of South Beach, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Path to 9/11, Law & amp; Order: Criminal Intent and many others.
In 2007, Hughes joined the cast of the 24th series as Homeland Security Secretary Tim Woods.
In 2012 he was part of the cast of the film Blue Lagoon: The Awakening along with Indiana Evans, Brenton Thwaites and Denise Richards, among others.
