Fran Ryan began acting at 16, at the Henry Duffy Theater in northern California. He attended Stanford University for three years, and during World War II was a member of the USO troops. He made comedy, singing and acting on stages in California and Chicago. His debut came in episode 43 of Batman, in 1966, followed by a part in The Beverly Hillbillies. The first role on television was like Aggie Thompson in the first episodes of The Doris Day Show. In the same season she was offered a “replacement” role in the Green Acres series as Doris Ziffel from 1969 to 1971. Fran replaced Barbara Pepper, who at the time was in poor health.
Unfortunately, Miss Pepper died five months after heart disease on July 15, 1969.
Ryan also starred in the Gunsmoke series. He participated in several films, including Flush, The Big Wednesday, Take This Job and Shove It, Pale Rider and Chances Are, as well as a cameo on Stripe.
Fran Ryan was often compared to actress Marjorie Main; They looked and sounded familiar with one another. Ryan died on January 15, 2000, at 83 years old. She is buried in the family’s grounds with her mother in Hayward, California.
