Ferdinand Jean Marie Foch (Tarbes, October 2, 1851 – Paris, March 20, 1929) was a French marshal and commander in chief of the Allied armies during World War I. < / p>

Ferdinand_Foch’s Biography

He was born in Tarbes, France, in 1851. He enlisted in the infantry of his country in 1870 and fought in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871 he entered the École Militaire, where he was assigned to the artillery gun in 1873.

He published Des Principes de la Guerre (The principles of war) in 1903 and De la Conduite de la Guerre (On the development of war) in 1904.

First World War

After the First World War broke out, he assumed command of the XXX Army Corps in Nancy in August 1914. It contained the advance of German forces during the Spring Offensive and the Second Battle of the Marne, in July 1918. For this, he launched the counterattack that would become the seed of Germanic defeat.

In July 1918, he was named Marshal of France, in November, he accepted the German surrender. Both for his advice during the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920 and for the pressure on Germany during the revolt in Poland in 1923, he was honored with the title of Marshal of Poland. He was also recognized with the supreme rank of British Field Marshal in 1919.

He expressed his dissatisfaction with the Treaty of Versailles by manifesting and prophesying about it with the famous phrase: “This is not a treaty of peace, but an armistice of twenty years.” Twenty years and 64 days later, the Second World War.

The place where the Armistice de Compiègne was signed was converted into a national monument. The railroad car where the signing took place was kept, and after the death of Foch, a statue was erected in his honor. The statue was the only thing left by the Nazis after the fall of France in 1940.

The name of the marshal was used to baptize the aircraft carrier Clemenceau Foch class (R 99).
