Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Short Bio

Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos (Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, September 11, 1917-Honolulu, Hawaii, September 28, 1989) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as president of the Philippines since 1965 to 1986, ruling through an authentic autocracy the country, and centralizing power at the national level with the help of his wife, the first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos.

Coming from a well-known and influential Filipino family, Ferdinand Marcos participated in the Philippine army during World War II, a performance that earned him a notorious recognition, which he used to rise to a brilliant political career. He served in three consecutive terms as a member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines, from 1949 to 1959, after which he went on to serve as Senator of the Philippines and became president of the Philippine Senate from 1962 to 1965, after which he was elected to the Presidency of the Philippines in 1965 and again in 1969. It is then, with the consequent proclamation of a martial law, that he remained in power during the nine years that it was in force. Later he went on to hold the post of prime minister of the Philippines, from 1978 to 1981, year in which he returned to get reelected for the presidency, position in which he remained for 21 years. He was eventually deposed by the EDSA Revolution in 1986, after which he went into exile with his wife in Hawaii.
