Felipe González Márquez (Seville, March 5, 1942) is a lawyer, university professor and politician, general secretary of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) from 1974 to 1997 and third president of the Government of Spain since the restoration of democracy, between 1982 and 1996.
In 1964 he joined the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, during the clandestine of this. The following year he finished his law studies at the University of Seville. In the Congress of Suresnes of 1974 of the renewed PSOE (split of the PSOE directed by Rodolfo Llopis), Felipe González was chosen secretary general of the PSOE. Already in democracy, he obtained his first act of deputy in 1977, being the PSOE candidate for the Presidency of the Government in 1977 and 1979.
After obtaining the PSOE the absolute majority in the elections of 1982, was invested president of the Government. His thirteen and a half year term was the longest period of a head of government of democracy in Spain. Under his direction the PSOE achieved two consecutive absolute majorities: the one of 1982, with 202 deputies in the Congress, and in 1986, elections in which it obtained 184 deputies; also, in 1989 it obtained 175 deputies, exactly half of those who make up the hemicycle. In 1993 it lost the absolute majority, obtaining 159 deputies. After this result, the PSOE agreed with Convergència i Unió to form a government. In 1996, lost the elections to achieve 141 deputies against 156 who won the Popular Party. He was elected deputy for the last time in 2000, the year in which he went to the elections on the PSOE list for the electoral constituency of Seville.
