Fausto Papetti (* Viggiù, Italy, January 28, 1923 – † San Remo, Italy, June 15, 1999) was an Italian musician of international fame, who began his artistic career at end of 1955. He generally used the alto saxophone, the tenor saxophone and the clarinet in his recordings.
He began his artistic career at the end of 1955, after having been part of some jazz orchestras, he began to play with the Champions group in which he accompanies the album and in concert Tony Dallara. < br>
In 1959 he left the group and signed a contract for Durium as a musician, after taking part in the engravings of the accompaniment tracks for several artists of the label.
One day, however, the conductor of the orchestra he belonged to did not want to record the B side of a 45 RPM record because the work of free choice, Estate Violenta, of the film of the same name, did not It was a satisfactory arrangement. The producer, eager to finish, decided to dispense with the orchestra and immediately called the rhythm section of the same line-up that was composed of only four elements: bass, drums, guitar and saxophone. The young saxophonist who was in charge of the music of the film was, in fact, Fausto Papetti, during the tests he improvised a personal elaboration of the melody, underlined with a great understanding by the rhythm section. After the test Papetti declared that he was ready to start, but the recording had been made without the knowledge of the four boys during the test.
Estate Violent, was released in 1959 under the name of Fausto Papetti Alto Saxo and rhythm, and was so successful sales, superior even to the original soundtrack of the film, that convinced the Durium to grant him in it year their first album. On the cover, a photo of him with the following title: Fausto Papetti – Alto Alto and Ritmi. It was a collection that included sixteen famous songs of the time arranged in an instrumental version, selected from film music (such as the theme song of La dolce vita written by Nino Rota or Scandalo al sole) and successes of the moment (Till, Too Much Tequila) ; without forgetting, however, his first love: jazz, Cheek to Cheek. This album was followed by a second: Fausto Papetti – Alto Saxo and rhythm – Raccolta № 2, which alternates with pieces of film music, standard and instrumental versions of hits. From the third album, all their albums were titled Raccolta and identified with the ordinal number.
Among the musicians who accompanied him we watched the famous drummer Pupo De Luca. In the following years he also played with Adriano Celentano and Enzo Jannacci who later became a film actor.
Papetti became well known throughout the sixties and seventies, and each new collection regularly came to the top of the sales charts. Between 1965 and 1975 he played with his orchestra and singer Jimmy Roty, in the Municipal House of Selva di Fasano, a town in the municipality of Fasano, then frequented by great names of music such as Mina, Peppino Di Capri, Ornella Vanoni, Caterina Caselli, John Foster (Paolo Occhipinti), Lara Saint Paul, Fred Bongusto, etc. He achieved considerable success abroad, especially in Germany, Spain and throughout the Latin American market.
Papetti’s versions correspond to the genre of light music or easy listening and were often the best solution to work as background music in restaurants, hotels, shops and accompanying music on car trips. The most successful time was, therefore, precisely with the diffusion of track 8 and cassette as easily transportable supports during the 70’s, and the sound of these seventies led Papetti to publish two collections a year. Papetti thus became the true founder of this genre and many companies tried to imitate the same formula with other talented musicians, such as Johnny Sax or Piergiorgio Farina.
The Papetti editions also marked a turning point in the design of the covers, as they were characterized by the presence of photographs of semi-nude women, at the time considered very daring.
In parallel to the “Raccoltas”, Durium Records, simultaneously published thematic albums, such as I Remember, and compilation albums: Old America, Evergreen, Bonjour France, Made in Italy, Ritmi dell’America Latina, Cinema anni ‘ 60, Cinema anni ’70.
In 1985, after 25 years, Fausto Papetti left Durium to record on CBS, in 1988 then acquired by Sony Music; and in 1989 he recorded for the Fonit Cetra label.
Fausto Papetti died in 1999 at age 76 after a fulminating heart attack and is buried in Ospedaletti, where he lived for more than twenty-five years.
