Fantasy Monique Barrino , better known as Fantasia (born June 30, 1984 in High Point) is a singer of R & B and neo soul. She was the winner of “American Idol” in 2004. She won the final with the song “I Believe”, but the song that made her most successful in the contest was “Summertime” by George Gershwin. With a voice with roots gospel, its mix between current themes and great classics of black music showed its versatility as a singer.
Fantasia Barrino’s Biography
Fantasia was born in High Point (North Carolina), and grew up listening to Monica, Brandy, Aretha Franklin, Pink; and a distant passion to these others; Aerosmith. With only 19 years old and being a single mother, Barrino had the most radical change in her life. Being a single mother since she was 17 years old was one of the reasons that most impelled her to appear at the Atlanta cast. in a casting of more than 70,000 people Fantasia was chosen for the versatility and potential of her voice, and her strength on stage. In front of another of the favorites, Diana DeGarmo, Fantasia made the audience with her spontaneity, especially with one of the most remembered events in the contest, just when one of her heels was broken, but she knew how to get out of the trouble without more. Another of his most famous appearances was when he appeared in “American dreams”, playing the role of Aretha Franklin. Fantasia Barrino was the first American Idol artist to get her first song to be directly a number one, “I Believe” written by Tamyra Gray. J-Records released its debut, “Free Yourself” in November 2004.
One of the first impositions of Clive Davis in the debut was to change the name of Fantasy Barrino by simply Fantasia, since, according to him, the divas only had to take a name. Clive Davis had so far all the winners of American Idol, and also those who despite having not won had triumphed. Under his direction were Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken among others, but all in short they were mere stars or pop singers; but with Fantasia it was tried to look for a personal style inside the R & B and the urban. In other albums of “triunfitos americanos” there were collaborations like Matthew Wilder (debut of Kelly Clarkson) or Neil Sedaka and Aldo Nova (in the debut of Clay Aiken); but in Fancy they were luxury collaborations like Missy Elliott, Jermaine Dupri and Rodney Jerkins; three of the largest producers of black music today; something that helped the album to have a new and very fresh sound. His passage through the contest was not forgotten; it is demonstrated with the new recording of “Summertime”, much more polished than that of his memorable performance in the program. The voice of Fantasia that radiated the televisions in spectacular performances of a few minutes, now could be heard in thirteen tracks. Some thought that their fine timbre, was not good to sing, and even many felt that their voice was not too good, but their fans their special timbre seems part of their idiosyncratic style. In 2011 she managed to get her first Grammy in the category of best “Vocal Performance Femenina” with the song Bittersweet, first single of her third album.
