Erwin Esteban Schrott Baladon (Montevideo, December 21, 1972) is an Uruguayan operatic bass-baritone, also Spanish nationalized by agreement of the Council of Ministers of Spain on October 29, 2010. He is particularly known for his portrayal of “Mozartian” characters such as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro and the leading role in Don Giovanni.
He made his professional debut in Montevideo at the age of 22, singing Roucher at Andrea Chénier followed by his debut at the Municipal Theater of Santiago de Chile, as Timur at Turandot, Colline at La Bohème, Sparafucile at Rigoletto and Ramfis at Aida , winning a scholarship to study in Italy.
In 1997 he debuted at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires with Sparafucile with Leo Nucci and Sumi Jo, returned in 1999 as Colline with Mirella Freni and in 2013 for The Marriage of Figaro.
By winning the first prize (men’s category) and the public prize of Operalia 1998 (competition founded by Plácido Domingo) he attracted the attention of important international theaters such as La Scala. He played the main role in Don Giovanni, the pharaoh in Mosè in Egitto by Rossini, Leporello in the Covent Garden in London, Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro and the bullfighter Escamillo de Carmen in the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
One of the most impressive figures of the new generation of opera singers, Schrott was married to the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko with whom he had a son on September 5, 2008 named Tiago Arua.
