Erwin Chargaff (August 11, 1905 – June 20, 2002) was an Austrian Jewish chemist who emigrated to the United States during the Nazi annexation of his country. After careful experiments, Chargaff discovered two rules that helped the discovery of the double helix of DNA.
Erwin Chargaff was born on August 11, 1905 in Czernowitz, Bukowina, Austria. He studied chemistry in Vienna, then spent two years at Yale University. From 1930 he worked at the University of Berlin until he moved to the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1933.
Erwin Chargaff analyzed the nitrogenous bases of DNA in different life forms, concluding that, the amount of purines were not always in proportions equal to those of the pyrimidines (contrary to the proposal by Levene), the proportion was equal in all the cells of the individuals of a given species, but it varied from one species to another.
