Ernesto Ramírez Alonso (Aguascalientes, February 28, 1917-Mexico City, August 7, 2007), better known as Ernesto Alonso , was an actor , director and producer of film and television. He played a key role in the history of Mexican soap operas reaching to produce 157 telenovelas, for which he was known as “El Señor Telenovela”. He is brother of the bullfighter Alfonso Ramírez Alonso “El Calesero” and uncle of the actor José Alonso
Ernesto Alonso was born on February 28, 1917 in the city of Aguascalientes. Since he was a child he wanted to be an actor. He started his career studying theater at Bellas Artes. At twenty he worked as an extra at La Zandunga, the only film that Lupe Vélez filmed in Mexico. His great opportunity came when the theater company of the Sisters Blanch went through Aguascalientes. Isabel and Anita Blanch borrowed from young Ernesto a turntable and, knowing that he dreamed of being an actor, took him to Mexico City.
Already in the capital [which?], Ernesto Alonso enters the world of cinema with La gallina clueca together actress Sara García. Although he films more than fifteen films in the 40’s, his great triumph comes at the end of that decade when he plays San Felipe de Jesús, a Mexican martyr, in the movie of the same name. The 50’s consolidate his acting career with films like Otra primavera, together with Libertad Lamarque, where he plays a schizophrenic; the adaptation of the work of Ibsen Casa de muñecas, together with Marga López; and two excellent films directed by the legendary Luis Buñuel: Abismos de pasión, an adaptation of Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, next to Lilia Prado and Irasema Dilian, and Ensayo de un crimen next to Miroslava Stern. It is he who brings to the small screen the work of Caridad Bravo Adams; makes adaptations of famous literary works; he invents the period genre with Corazón salvaje, the historical production with Maximiliano and Carlota, and even the telenovela biography with Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. He also directs more than thirty of his productions.
As an actor he would move in Letters without destiny, interpreting an old failure that serves as Cyrano to a young taxi driver and falls in love with the addressee of his letters; he terrorized like the mafioso mobster of El hexficio, of which he made a film version with Lucía Méndez; and surprised in a double role as a perverse businessman and his twin mystic in the white and black (his last protagonist). From 1990 he devoted himself fully to producing telenovelas, although he made a special participation in 1995 in Bajo un mismo rostro for being the first production of Humberto Zurita and Christian Bach.
In 1996 he produced the last historical telenovela for Televisa entitled La torch lit, modern version of Los caudillos, starring Humberto Zurita, Leticia Calderón, Christian Bach, Juan Peláez, Ernesto Laguardia, Roberto Ballesteros, René Casados, Sergio Reynoso and María Red and antagonized by Juan Ferrara, Ofelia Guilmain, Julieta Rosen, Enrique Rocha, Ari Telch, Sergio Klainer and Lorenzo de Rodas.
In the new millennium he played a priest in Abrazazame very strong 2000-2001, and the abbot of a monastery in Between love and hate 2002.At his nineties, Alonso continued active with his successes, as the trilogy composed for the Other, Amarte is my sin, and Barrera de amor, where Yadhira Carrillo made her first stellar roles; and used Jaime García Estrada and Orlando Merino as head writers.
Since its inception in telenovelas, Ernesto Alonso was known for sponsoring new talents and giving his first stars to many renowned actors, including Jorge Rivero, Eduardo Yáñez, his nephew Jorge Vargas, and others. When receiving a TVyNovelas award for Bet for a love, Fabián Robles thanked Mr. Alonso for giving him the opportunity to enter the world of telenovelas.
Alonso’s contribution and human quality was recognized by people of all generations: he was a friend of new actors as he was of great artists of the past. His friendship with María Félix was legendary (he convinced her to make the only telenovela in which Felix would participate: The Constitution). Another great friendship was with the actress Miroslava Stern, who committed suicide in 1955 (according to Alonso himself, the actress confessed a long depression that led her to such a tragic decision, and while they were filming Ensayo de un crimen, she said that if she did not made during the film was for friendship towards him).
The death of the so-called “Mr. Telenovela” closed a stage in the history of the genre, with a unique quality seal that Ernesto Alonso imposed on the Mexican telenovela.
