Eric B

Eric B. & amp; Rakim was an East Coast hip-hop duo that popularized hip hop influenced by funk in the late 1980s. Despite not having released any tracks that have been successful on the charts, they are considered as one of the most influential and important groups in the history of rap, both for the productions for them of people like Marley Marl, and for the revolutionary style of rapping of Rakim; soft, seemingly easy and with complex rhymes. Almost all modern MCs agree that they have been influenced in some way by Rakim’s rapper technique.

Eric Barrier ( Eric B. ) and William Griffin ( Rakim ) started recording together in the middle of the decade with the innovative producer Marley Marl, who put his production art on his debut single “Eric B. Is President” (1986) under Zakia Records in Harlem (New York). Paid in Full ([1987)] and Follow the Leader were his first albums and at that time they were a hit in hip hop. Their last album together was Do not Sweat The Technique in 1992. During the recording of the album, both members did not hide their desire to create a solo album. However, Eric B. refused to sign the release contract of the record company, fearing that Rakim would leave. This led to a long court battle between the two artists and their former MCA label.

Eric B. has been on several production teams throughout his career (for a short period he even worked with Dr. Dre). In 1995, he recorded his solo debut album. It was written with Jamie Foxxx and he did not have much interest in the world of rap.

At the end of the 90s, Rakim released two solo albums. The first, The 18th Letter, in 1997, had a surprising commercial success and was praised by critics. The Master, in 1999, was the second album and was not very successful nor received very good reviews. In 2000, he signed for Aftermath Entertainment, seal of Dr. Dre, and both began work on an album that would be called Oh My God. However, in July 2003, the official Aftermath website announced that Rakim and Dre were taking different paths because of creative differences.

Popular rap metal band Rage Against the Machine paid homage to Eric B. & amp; Rakim when making a new version of “Microphone Fiend”. It is also known that they are among the favorite groups of Zack de la Rocha.
