Elsa Martinelli (Grosseto, Tuscany, January 30, 1935-Rome, July 8, 2017) was an Italian actress.
Her real name was Elsa Tia In 1953 she moved with her family from her native Tuscany to Rome, where she fascinated the fashion designer Roberto Capucci and, thanks to him, began her career as a model of fashion. In the 1950s he began to participate in films. Especially important was his participation in the western honor pact (The Indian Fighter, 1955), directed by André de Toth and starring Kirk Douglas and Walter Matthau. It was Douglas himself who wanted Martinelli to act after seeing a photo of him in a North American magazine. In 1956, she won a silver bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival for her role in Donatella by Mario Monicelli.
Elsa Martinelli married for the first time in 1957 with Count Franco Mancinelli Scotti di San Vito, with whom she had a daughter, Cristiana Mancinelli, born in 1958 and who also started a brief acting career that did not prosper. In 1968, Elsa Martinelli married the photographer and furniture designer Willy Rizzo in a second marriage, after whom she also divorced.
His film career had a great international projection from the beginning, and between the mid-1950s and the end of the following decade it was divided between the United States and Europe (here especially between Italy and France). He worked with directors such as Orson Welles and Howard Hawks, and with actors such as Marcello Mastroianni, John Wayne or Robert Mitchum. In 1970 he traveled to Peru and Chile for the shooting of La Araucana, directed by Julio Coll and inspired by the homonymous epic poem written by Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga. In this film, Martinelli incarnated Inés de Suárez, companion of the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. From then on, he only appeared sporadically in a movie, TV series or Italian telefilms. In 1971 he presented the San Remo Festival together with Carlo Giuffrè.
Died on July 8, 2017 at the age of 82.
