Ellison Onizuka Short Bio

Ellison Shoji Onizuka (* June 24, 1946 in Kealakekua, Kona, Hawaii – † January 28, 1986 in the crash of the Space Shuttle Challenger) was Lieutenant Colonel of the Air Force of the United States and NASA astronaut. His religion was Buddhism.

In 1964 he graduated from Konawaena High School in Kealakekua, Hawaii. In June of 1969 he obtained a degree in aerospace engineering and in December of the same year the master of this discipline from the University of Colorado.

After receiving his assignment in the ROTC program at the University of Colorado, Onizuka served the Air Force as a military officer in January 1970. As an aerospace test flight engineer with the Sacramento Air Logistics Center at the McClellan Air Force Base, California, participated in flight test programs and systems safety engineering for the ships F-84, F-100, F-105, F-III, EC-121T, T-33, T -39, T-28, and Al.

From August 1974 to July 1975 he attended the USAF Pilot Testing School where he received both formal academic instruction and performance flight, stability and control, and flight test systems. In July 1975, he was assigned to the Air Force Test Flight Center at the Edwards Air Force Base in California where he served as a squadron test flight engineer at the Flight Flight Pilots School of the USAF. , and later worked as head of the engineering support section in the training resources division. His duties there were based on the instruction of curricular courses for the USAF Test Pilot School and the management of all flight test modifications for the entire aircraft fleet (A-7, A-37, T-38 , F-4, T-33, and NKC-135) that were used by the Test Pilot School and the Test Flight Center.
Ellison Onizuka managed to register more than 1,700 flight hours.
