Her full name was Ella Wallace Raines , and she was born near Snoqualmie Falls, Washington. Raines studied drama at the University of Washington, and acted in a play when she was discovered by Howard Hawks. She was the first interpreter to be hired to work for the production company formed by Hawks and the actor Charles Boyer, “B-H Productions”, being her debut film Corvette K-225 (1943). That same year he worked in a war tape with female cast, Cry ‘Havoc’. In 1944 he starred in a series of major films, including the production of black film Phantom Lady, the comedy Hail the Conquering Hero, and the western John Wayne Tall in the Saddle.
However, Raines soon started acting in B movies, as was the case with the 1945 film The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry, with Geraldine Fitzgerald and George Sanders, and the 1947 thriller The Web. With the exception of Brute Force, in which Raines acted along with Burt Lancaster, none of his subsequent titles achieved the successes obtained at the beginning of his film career, which was gradually declining. Even so, Raines appeared twice on the cover of Life thanks to his work in 1944 in Phantom Lady and in 1947 in Fuerza Bruta.
In 1954 and 1955 he starred in the television series Janet Dean, Registered Nurse. In addition, he worked in television shows such as Robert Montgomery Presents, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Presents, Lights Out, Pulitzer Prize Playhouse and The Christophers. Although he retired from acting in 1957, he still made a subsequent performance in 1984 on the television series Matt Houston.
Raines was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for his film work at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard, and another for his television activity at 6600 on the same route.
Raines was married in 1947 to the fighter pilot of the United States Air Force and Brigadier General Robin Olds. The actress died of throat cancer in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles (California), in 1988. She was buried in the Glen Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in Sylmar, Los Angeles.
