Elizabeth Strout (Portland, January 6, 1956) is an American fiction writer. In 2009 he won the Pulitzer Fiction Prize for his novel Olive Kitteridge, a collection of stories about a woman, her immediate family and friends on the coast of Maine.The book has been adapted to a miniseries broadcast by the HBO signal, which who won six Emmys in 2015.

Strout was born in Portland, Maine, and was raised in small towns in Maine and New Hampshire. His father was a science teacher, and his mother a high school teacher. After graduating from Bates College, Strout spent a year in Oxford, England, followed by a year of law studies. He graduated with honors in 1982, and received both a law degree and a certificate in Gerontology from the University of Syracuse. In that same year he published his first story in the literary magazine New Letters.
Strout moved to New York City, continued to write stories that were published in literary magazines, as well as Redbook and Seventeen.
She worked for six or seven years to complete her book, Amy and Isabelle, which, after its publication, was pre-selected in 2000 for the Orange Award and nominated for the Faulkner fiction prize. Amy and Isabelle was adapted as a television movie, starring Elisabeth Shue and produced by Oprah Winfrey.
Strout was a professor at the NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) at Colgate University in the fall of 2007. There she taught creative writing for both beginning and advanced levels. He was also part of the Master of Fine Arts at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In 2009, Strout was honored with the Pulitzer Fiction Prize by Olive Kitteridge, and her most recent novel, The Burgess Boys, was published in March 2013.
