Eliezer Wiesel (in Hungarian: Wiesel Lázár; Sighetu Marmaţiei, September 30, 1928-New York, July 2, 2016) was a writer of Yiddish and French language, of American nationality , a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps. He devoted his whole life to writing and talking about the horrors of the Holocaust, with the firm intention of preventing a similar barbarism from happening in the world. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

Elie Wiesel’s Biography

Wiesel was born in 1928 and at age 16 was arrested by the Germans, like the other Jews of his people, when the Nazi Ferenc Szálasi seized power by force, overthrowing the Hungarian ruler Miklós Horthy. He survived the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, and was liberated by the Allied forces on April 11, 1945. His father Shlomo, his mother Sarah and his younger sister Judith “Tzipora” perished; however, her two older sisters Hilda and Bea managed to stay alive, studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris, and later worked in newspapers in Israel, France and the United States, where she settled in 1956.

Author of three novels about his experiences during those years of repression and death (La noche, El alba and El día, published in Spanish under the title of Trilogy of the night), won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

On May 16, 1944, the Wiesel family, like many other Jewish families, embarked on a train bound for the Birkenau extermination camp. “It’s the first stop, then Auschwitz and Buchenwald come in. It’s a closed night, outer darkness to which they are thrown, along with so many murdered or surviving Jews, our bowels of humanity, our source of deep compassion.” The night (1956-1958) was the title that most fame gave Wiesel.
