Mircea Eliade (Bucharest, Romania, March 9, 1907 – Chicago, United States, April 22, 1986) was a philosopher, historian of religions and Romanian novelist. He spoke and wrote with Romanian, French, German, Italian and English correctness, and could also read Hebrew, Persian and Sanskrit. He wrote most of his work in Romanian, French and English. He was part of the Eranos Circle.

Eliade’s Biography

Born on March 9, 1907 in Bucharest, he studied baccalaureate and later Philosophy in that city, graduating with a study on philosophy in the Italian Renaissance, for which he traveled to Italy and came in contact with Giuseppe Tucci ( experiences that he picked up in the autobiographical novels Novel of the myopic adolescent and Gaudeamus); Tucci put him in touch with what would be his great mentor, Surendranath Dasgupta; He moved to India and studied the language, thought and religious tradition of Hinduism.

From 1932 to 1940 he taught in Bucharest. His novel Maytreya (1936), in which he recounted his disastrous story with Dasgupta’s daughter, made him known as a young Romanian literary value. In 1940 he was appointed cultural attaché of the Romanian Embassy in London and later in 1941 in Lisbon.

In 1945, at the end of World War II, he traveled to Paris, where he became a visiting professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études at the Sorbonne until 1957, when he was appointed Professor of History of Religions at the University. from Chicago, where he taught until his death, which occurred in 1986.
