Elena Garro was born in Puebla de los Ángeles on December 11, 1916. She spent her childhood in Mexico City. During the Cristero War, his family moved to Iguala, in the state of Guerrero. As a young man he traveled to Mexico City to study literature, choreography and theater at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). There he met Octavio Paz, with whom he married in 1937. Elena accompanied him to Spain that same year and returned in 1938. The result of this trip was the testimonial book Memories of Spain 1937. They had a daughter, Helena, and finally they divorced in 1959. He spoke several languages ​​and lived several years in Europe before returning to Mexico in 1963. He had graduated from both the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Paris.

Following the massacre of Tlatelolco in 1968, he published in the press statements against several Mexican intellectuals who he blamed for instigating the students and then abandoning them to their fate. These accusations caused the rejection of the Mexican intellectual community of that time, which led her to exile first in the United States and Spain, then in France for twenty years.

When he returned to Mexico, he lived in Cuernavaca, where he died in poverty as a result of lung cancer due to smoking on August 22, 1998.
