Early years and beginning of his career

Edgardo Franco was born on September 27, 1969, in the city of Panama. He is the son of Catalina, a woman with ancestry from Jamaica and her father, Víctor has roots in Trinidad and Tobago. He has 5 brothers and 5 sisters. At the age of 12, Edgardo began to write songs inspired by the social situation of his neighborhood and his own experiences, he added melodies to them and then he recorded them on cassettes, which he later distributed to the collective transport drivers so that they could put them on their routes, and so take your message to the community. After getting a scholarship, the young artist moved to the US. to study business administration, he soon became a professional accountant. However, he decided to start a career as a singer.


The first album of El General was called “Tu Pun Pun”, which shortly after released his debut album, Eres Buena, which included the hit “Te Ves Buena”. In 1991 the album Muévelo Con El General allowed him to start touring Latin America. But the top of sales reached him with his version of “El Meneaito”, although originally this was a song by the Argentine duo Lucas vs Pablo and “El Boyerio”. In 1992, the catchy “Muévelo”, a mix of Latin rap and reggae from Jamaica, won an MTV Award for Best Latin Video. The Power of the General, published in 1993, presented a new success for Edgardo Franco, a merengue called “Caramelo”.

The success of Edgardo Franco leaves behind those days of poverty in his native neighborhood of Rio Abajo, in the Panamanian capital when he was selling soft drinks at concerts in Panama City and dreamed of being on stage.

In 1985 Edgardo traveled to the United States to meet his mother, who had emigrated a few years earlier. Once in New York, he attended the Erasmus Hall Academy of Art and Music in Brooklyn, where he stood out as President of the Latino Club.

Music producer Michael Ellis opened his own label company called New Creation Enterprises in Manhattan (New York). Michael Ellis with his partner David Uriel launched El General’s career, with hits such as “Te Ves Buena”, “Gran Pana”, “Son Bow”, “I Love You”, “El Maestro”, “Muévelo Muévelo”, ” Mermaid Body “,” Juana “,” Funkete “,” El Gusanito “,” What does that Babe want “,” Las Chicas “,” Do not try to cheat me “,” El Meneaito “and many more.

Musical Retreat

In 2004, he announced his retirement from the music industry, coinciding with an incident between “El General” and the government of Panama that canceled his diplomatic passport. Even so, he minimized the incident and clarified that he said goodbye to the music to devote himself fully as an entrepreneur and producer. In 2006 he made his last tour in several countries.
