In 1979, when he was only 16 years old, he jumped into professionalism, becoming a lightweight world champion at 20 years of age. \n At the end of 1987 he faced Julio C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in Las Vegas, being knocked out; he subsequently won the WBA Lightweight title twice, but lost both times in the first defense.
