He started boxing at the age of six and started his professional debut in 1979 knocking out José Villegas, and four years later he became the WBC champion after defeating José Luis Ramírez, and a year later lost his undefeated after be defeated by Ramírez; and in 1986 he was defeated by Héctor Camacho, for which he did not recover his title, but he won the WBA title.
Born on March 15, 1963 in El Barrio Candelaria in the Municipality of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, Edwin “Chapo” Rosario began in amateur sports at the early age of 6 years and at age 9 trained with the well-known trainer of the Island, Manny Sciaca in the municipal gym of Levittown, Toa Baja. As an amateur, he celebrated 30 fights, winning 28 and losing 2. Among his achievements are the Puerto Rican championship of golden gloves and the junior Olympic title. In 1979, when he was only 16 years old, he jumped into professionalism, becoming a lightweight world champion at 20 years of age.
At the end of 1987 he faced Julio César Chávez in Las Vegas, being knocked out; he subsequently won the WBA Lightweight title twice, but lost both times in the first defense. After being defeated by Frankie Randall in 1993, he retired and had problems with alcohol and drugs, as well as being imprisoned on some occasions.
During his retirement period, personal problems of controlled substance use and alcohol led him to prison for a year. After completing a rehabilitation program, he returned to the world of boxing in May 1997, the year in which he won five fights. Notwithstanding the foregoing, his problems continued. His biggest victory was publicly admitting his problems of drug addiction during most of his career. From that moment he struggled to get out of his problems of vice like never before. Time was your worst enemy.
Died on December 1, 1997 as a result of pulmonary edema. He posted a professional record of 47 wins (41 knockouts) and 6 losses. Currently, the municipal gym in the Levittown sector of Toa Baja is named after him. In 2006, Edwin “El Chapo” Rosario became the sixth Puerto Rican to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
