Edmon Locard (Saint-Chamond, Rhône-Alpes, December 13, 1877 – Lyon, May 4, 1966) was a French criminologist, considered one of the leading pioneers. He is famous for stating the so-called “Locard Exchange Principle”.
Edmond Locard’s Biography
Locard studied at the University of Lyon, where he graduated in law and received his doctorate in medicine. He worked as an assistant to another forensic pioneer, Alexandre Lacassagne, professor of forensic medicine at the university. He continued in this position until 1910, when he founded the Lyon Criminalistics Laboratory. He was also director of the city police office.
Edmond Locard wrote treatises on criminology and poroscopy. He is the author of Traité de Criminalistique, a treatise in seven volumes that constitutes a true reference in the matter, in which he affirmed that “writing the history of identification is writing the history of criminology”. The phrase “the microscopic remains that cover our clothes and our bodies are mute, sure and faithful witnesses of our movements and our encounters” is also his. “
