Carl Georg Oscar Drude (1852, Braunschweig – 1933, Dresden) was a botanist, a German university professor; and, co-founder of Plant Ecology as a discipline.
He studied from 1870, Sciences and Chemistry in the “Collegium Carolinum” (now Technical University of Braunschweig, and in 1871 goes to the University of Göttingen, where he will be Assistant to A. Grisebach, staying until 1879.
In 1874 he finally receives his Ph.D., and opposes and wins as Herbarium Assistant with Frederick G. Bartling. There in Gottingen he was active university botanist lecturer, although ad honorem. In 1876 it is enabled in Botany. In 1879 he accepted a rented position at the “Dresden Polytechnic”, with a Chair in Botany. When in 1890 the Polytechnic was created as a Technical Faculty, Dresden had great influence in the transformation towards a more scientific Botany. The same year he will be Director of the Botanical Garden of Dresden, being very competent and judicious conservative. Together with the agronomist Bruno Steglich, they also work in an Agriculture Station for the cultivation of plants.
At age 81, Oscar dies on February 1, 1933 in Dresden.
He was the older brother of physicist Paul Drude.
