Theodor Seuss Geisel (Springfield, Massachusetts, March 2, 1904 – San Diego, California, September 24, 1991) was an American writer and caricaturist known for his children’s books written under his pseudonym, Dr. Seuss He published more than 60 books for children, which are often characterized by their imaginative characters, rhymes and the frequent use of the three-syllable counter.

Dr. Seuss wrote such popular books as Hop on Pop, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (How The Grinch Stole Christmas), which has as main character the Grinch, The Lorax (The Lorax) and The Cat in the Hat – also known as The Cat Scribble (The Cat in the Hat) and the cat in shadows. Using stories and surreal images, Seuss’s works awaken the imagination of readers while dealing with essential issues such as the deterioration of the environment or the acquisition of one’s identity. The constant play on words turns their texts into almost untranslatable works.

In 1984 he received a special mention of the Pulitzer Prize, for his contribution to children’s literature.

Dr Seuss’s Biography

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield (Massachusetts), son of Henrietta Seuss and Theodor P. Geisel. He had two sisters, his father was a superintendent of parks and he was in charge of Forest Park in Springfield, a huge park that included a zoo within its limits and was located three blocks from a bookstore. He was a member of an emigrant family from Germany, so the name Seuss would actually be pronounced “zoiz”, however in the United States popularized the pronunciation “seus” and is the pronunciation almost universally accepted when referring to the name of this writer. /p>

He attended the University of Darthmouth, where he joined the university newspaper and became the editor-in-chief. However, when the authorities of the institution discovered a clandestine party organized by Theodor during a dry law period, they decided that young Geisel should give up all his extracurricular activities. When he was deprived of his position as an editor, he looked for ways to continue participating in the writing of his university newspaper, the Darthmouth Jack-O-Lantern, so he began to sign his texts as “Seuss”. He then went to Lincoln University, in Oxford, England, seeking a doctorate in literature. In Oxford he met Helen Palmer Geisel, with whom he married in 1927. He ended up returning to the United States without having obtained the title. The “Dr.” of his pseudonym is a tribute to the wishes of his father, who longed for him to obtain a doctorate in Oxford. During a difficult illness the wife committed suicide on October 23, 1967. Seuss married the following year with Audrey Stone Dimond. Dr. Seuss passed away after several years of illness in La Jolla, California, on September 24, 1991. In 2002 the Dr. Seuss National Sculpture Garden was opened in his hometown, Springfield, Massachusetts and has several statues of Dr. Seuss and many of his characters. Despite having devoted much of his life to writing children’s books, Dr. Seuss never had children.
