Dorothy Mae Stang (Ohio, United States, July 7, 1931-Pará, Brazil, February 12, 2005) was a missionary of the Sisters of Our Lady of Namur, American, nationalized Brazilian and recognized by all as a fighter for human and social rights, who had received the title of Citizen of Pará. She was killed in 2005 in the Amazon jungle when she read the Bible while walking to a meeting with her supporters.

On the morning of February 12, 2005, Stang got up early to walk to a community meeting to discuss the rights of the Amazon.
Ciero, a farmer that Stang invited to the meeting, was going to be late. Ciero was a couple of minutes behind Stang, but he could see her and hide from the two armed men who followed her. She advanced and was blocked by the two men, Clodoaldo Carlos Batista and Raifran das Naves Sales. They asked her if she had any weapons, and she said that her only weapon would be her Bible. Then he read a passage from the beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit …”. She followed a couple of steps but was suddenly stopped when Ciero called her “Sister”, since Raifran pointed her. When Clodoaldo gave the go-ahead to shoot Stang, Raifran shot him in the abdomen. She fell flat on the floor. Raifran shot him another shot in the back, and then shot the remaining four bullets in his head.
Clodoaldo and Raifran are currently in prison.
