Doris May Roberts (St. Louis, November 4, 1925 – Los Angeles, April 17, 2016) was an American actress. Throughout his 70-year career, he ventured into film, theater and television. She was known for playing the role of Marie Barone in Everybody Loves Raymond (1996-2005).

First years

Doris Roberts was born in November 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. Daughter of Ann and Larry Meltzer, her father left the family when she was little, being raised by her mother and stepfather, Chester H. Roberts, in the Bronx neighborhood of New York.

Roberts’ first husband was Michael Cannata; they divorced in 1962. His son, Michael Cannata Jr. (born 1957) is the administrator of Roberts, and is the father of his three grandchildren: Kelsey, Andrew, and Devon. Her second husband was the writer William Goyen. She was married to Goyen from 1963 until her death from leukemia on August 30, 1983.


He studied at the University of New York, debuting on Broadway with William Saroyan’s classic “The Time of Your Life”, in 1955. He had previously started his career in television in 1952 with a starring role in the TV series “Studio One” and appearances in “The Naked City” (1952). Despite the recognition of his innate ability to interpret, he decided he needed professional training, and entered the famed Actors Studio, where he had Marilyn Monroe as his partner. Continuing with her work in television, Roberts had main roles or as a guest in “Ben Casey” (1963), “The Defenders” (1962 – 1963), “Angie” (1979-1980), “St. Elsewhere” (1982) ), or “Remington Steele” (1983-1987).

Roberts also worked as guest artist on numerous series such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “Rhoda”, “Dream On”, “Empty Nest”, “Perfect Strangers”, “Barney Millar”, “Mary Hartman” , “Soap”, “Full House” and “A crime has been written”.

In 1961, he began his film career in “Something Wild”, and in 1968 he participated in the films “A Lovely Way to Die” and “No Way to Treat a Lady”.

In 1971, he starred in three films: “Such Good Friends”, “Little Murders”, and “A New Leaf” with Walter Matthau. Later in 1978, he starred in the film “Ruby and Oswald”, and also appeared briefly in “The Rose” with Bette Midler.

He also worked in television films such as “A Thousand Men and a Baby” (1997), “A Time To Heal” (1994), “Blind Faith” (1990), “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1980) , “It Happened One Christmas” (1977), “Letter to three wives” (1985), “Ordinary Heros” (1986), and “Sons of Mistletoe” (2001). In 2003, she made a special appearance as Grandma del Gordo in the Disney series, Lizzie McGuire.

In the last decade, Roberts became well known for her portrayal of the meddlesome, insufferable and manipulative Marie Barone in the comedy series “Everybody Loves Raymond” (1996-2005). it included more than 100 applicants; and for that work she was nominated seven times for the Emmy awards, having won it four times. Another Emmy Award was won for his participation in the drama series “St. Elsewhere” where he played a woman without a roof.

Roberts was an active community service person and founder of the Children Affected By AIDS Association and Puppies Behind Bars. For three years in a row, she became the producer of “A Night of Comedy,” in which she brought together the best stars of the comedy to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the Children Affected By AIDS association. With Puppies Behind Bars, he helped to convey a new sense of humanity and responsibility to prisoners by providing pets.

Roberts was named Cultural Ambassador by the US Department of State. UU and traveled to underdeveloped countries to speak to young people about hope. In 2004, Secretary of State Colin Powell granted him a humanitarian award.

For his humanitarian efforts he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor on May 7, 2011.
