Don Rickles’s Biography
First years and professional beginnings
Rickles was born in Queens, a suburb of New York, the son of Jewish parents (Max and Etta Rickles). Growing up in the Jackson Heights area, after graduating from Newtown High School, he served in the United States Navy during World War II the USS Cyrene ship as S1 / c (sailor). He was demobilized in 1946. Two years later he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and acted in small roles on television. Frustrated by the lack of continued work, he started making live comedy. He began to be known as insult comedian (humorist based on insults) responding to the hecklers (spectators who interrupt the shows with impertinent comments). The audience liked these insults more than the material they had prepared, so they were incorporated as part of their performance. His style was similar to that of a former practitioner of this kind of humor, Jack E. Leonard, although Rickles denied that Leonard had influenced his style.
While working at a nightclub in Los Angeles, Rickles went jokingly to Frank Sinatra. Rickles said that he had just seen his film, Pride and Passion, and that he wanted to tell him that the interpretation of the cannon had been great, adding that he went home and hit someone, to Sinatra, who nicknamed Rickles as “bullet-head”, he liked Rickles so much that he encouraged other celebrities to go see Rickles’ performance and be insulted by him. Sinatra’s support helped Rickles become a popular regular artist in Las Vegas.
Rickles began to be nicknamed at this time with the nicknames “The Merchant of Venom” and “Mr. Warmth”, for the kind of humor he did based on insult, aimed at people of all kinds of ethnicities and forms of lifetime. From those years also comes the custom that his entry into the stages or TV sets is accompanied by the interpretation of the pasodoble bullfighter “La Virgen de la Macarena”, with the intention of suggesting that with his presence someone will be bullied, metaphorically speaking .
In 1967 he starred in the comedy The Odd Couple, by Neil Simon, alongside Ernest Borgnine.
Likewise, Rickles starred in the 1998 movie “Dennis the Menace Strikes Again,” opposite Justin Cooper, known in Latin America as Daniel the Travieso Attacks Again, playing Mr. Wilson.
Don Rickles died on April 6, 2017, at the age of 90, of renal failure.
