Dik Browne (Manhattan, New York, August 11, 1917 – Sarasota, Florida, June 4, 1989), born as Richard Arthur Allan Browne , was an American cartoonist and cartoonist, known for his cartoon Hägar the Horrible and for having been the artist of Hi and Lois.
Browne attended Cooper Union art school and got his first job in the graphic arts in the New York Journal American, as a messenger. Later he went to the art department and joined the army, where he collaborated with the engineering unit as a map copier and created Jinny Jeep, a press strip on the women’s wing of the army, Women’s Army Corps.
In the 1940s, he worked as an artist for Newsweek and for an advertising company, where he created the official Chiquita logo.
In 1954, Browne and cartoonist Mort Walker co-created the Hi and Lois press strip, a spin-off of the popular Beetle Bailey strip, also by Walker, whose protagonists were Beetle’s sister, his brother-in-law and his family. Walker wrote the cartoon script, while Browne was in charge of the drawings until his death. Currently, his son Chance is the artist and the children of Walker, the writers. In 1973, Browne created Hägar the Horrible (also known as Olaf the Viking), a cartoon about a medieval Viking with a redhead beard and lousy manners. Both strips were very successful, and appeared in hundreds of newspapers for decades.
