Dieter Rams (May 20, 1932, Wiesbaden Germany -) is a German industrial designer, closely associated with the Braun consumer products company.
Rams was a key figure in the revival of German Functionalist design (the Gute Form) of the late 1950s and 1960s. When he finally became the head of the Braun design team, Rams greatly influenced the stylistic direction of the brand, leading to a Rationalism that would soon characterize the company’s products and identity.
Rams explains his vision and approach to design through his famous paradigm expressed by the phrase in German: “Weniger, aber besser” that interpreted into Spanish would be equivalent to the phrase “Less, but with better execution”. Rams and his team designed many memorable Braun products, including the famous SK-4 recorder-player and the high quality 35mm D45, D46 slide projector. Rams is also famous for the design of the Universal Shelving System 606, for Vitsœ in 1960. Many of his designs (elegant coffee makers, calculators, radios, audiovisual equipment, consumer appliances, and office products) have found a permanent place in several museums of the world, including the MoMA of New York. Dieter Rams served Braun A.G. for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1998.
The principles established by Dieter Rams have had a great influence on many designers, but very few respect each and every one of its ten fundamental design principles cited below.
