Diana Krall’s Biography

Diana Krall was born into a family of musicians in Nanaimo, a small fishing village on Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada. He grew up with his sister Michelle in a musical environment: his grandmother was a jazz singer and his parents, Adella and Jim, played the piano. The dozens of Fats Waller albums that her father collected and that she tried to play on a note-by-note basis when she was four years old, when she began taking piano lessons, were her first conscious musical influence. Very young he moved with his family to the city of Vancouver and there he joined the jazz band of his high school. At fifteen he was already playing regularly in several restaurants in Vancouver. At that age, although she felt very comfortable as an instrumentalist, she began to attract more and more the role of singer-pianist, as were Roberta Flack or Nina Simone, her admired artists of that time.

At seventeen, in 1981, he won a scholarship from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied and resided for three years, after which he returned to his hometown. In Nanaimo, during one of his night performances in a small venue, he caught the attention of a famous double bass player named Ray Brown (ex-husband of Ella Fitzgerald) who, impressed by his talent, appeared in his dressing room and proposed to be his mentor and manager. She accepted the proposal, starting a professional relationship that lasted until July 2004, with the death of Brown. The latter had persuaded her to move to Los Angeles where, thanks to a grant from the Canadian government, she continued her studies under the tutelage of pianist Jimmy Rowles, director of the legendary Hollywood Bowl concert hall. There he met notable teachers and producers and also began to sing. In 1990, after living a season in Toronto, he moved again, this time to New York, where he formed his own trio and published his first album Stepping Out with the small record label Justin Time. In 1994 he released his album Only Trust Your Heart with the production of Tommy LiPuma. In 1996 he undertook his first international tour of the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, and presented his work All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio, in homage to Nat King Cole. Her next album, the album Love Scenes of 1997, placed her definitely among the great jazz figures of all time. In 1999 he got his first platinum record for the million-dollar sales of his album WhenLook In Your Eyes and his first Grammy Award.

The music of Diana Krall also began to sound on television series such as Sex and the City and films like The Score and Autumn in New York. In 2000 she received the Order of British Columbia as ambassador for this province and for Canadian culture around the world. In 2001 he published his album The Look of Love, in homage to Frank Sinatra and with the accompaniment of the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of veteran musician and arranger Claus Ogerman, one of his favorites. This album was a success and won two Grammy awards. In 2002 he released his first live album, Live in Paris, recorded during a series of recitals at the Olympia in Paris. In May of that year, when he was at the height of his artistic career, he received the hardest blow of his life: the death of his mother Adelle, victim of cancer. This family tragedy gave birth to the sensitive compositions of the album The Girl In The Other Room of 2004 and made Diana Krall an active and recognized fighter against cancer. The lyrics of six melodies from that album were written with the collaboration of the British musician Elvis Costello, whom he met in 2002 during the Grammy awards. This relationship, initially professional and then sentimental, was essential in the change of direction of the artist, who had never presented her own compositions before.

Diana Krall and Elvis Costello were married in December 2003. On December 6, 2006 in New York they had their first children, the twins Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James. With them he travels on all his tours and they are his most important concern, beyond the recognition of his career, such as the Grammy Awards. In this regard, said in a recent interview: “…do not work according to the Grammy, know many people do, butspend my time thinking is if the hotel wherestay tonight there is a pool for Children: that is the main activity on my agenda. ” Regarding her relationship with her husband, she comments in the same interview with Carlos Solano from El Tiempo newspaper in Bogotá: “… he does not exert any influence on my music, but he does inspire me constantly. what we do, so we can not see each other very much, he’s also on tour and I’m on my own, so we’ve decided to go each one for his own, trying to enjoy each minute to the fullest. “
