After failing to enter a concert of the punk rock band Social Distortion in 1984, Dexter began playing with his friend Greg K, giving rise to different musical groups until he reached The Offspring, with which They achieved success internationally. Among his musical influences are Sex Pistols.

In 1994 he founded the independent record label Nitro Records, with his partner Greg Kriesel, and recently Dexter has released his own hot sauce, prepared by him under his recipe, to season tacos and burritos, Gringo Bandito, receiving the support of punk groups.

Dexter_Holland’s Biography

The son of an administrator and a teacher, the third of four siblings, Dexter was an excellent student After graduating from high school, he went to study molecular biology at the University of Southern California, his partner at The Offspring, Noodles, he was the one who gave him the nickname Dexter, in reference to the name of a brainiac from an animated series, Holland obtained his PhD in molecular biology in May 2017 with a thesis on the RNA sequence of the HIV virus.

In 1984, Dexter and Greg K decided to form a band and the name Manic Subsidial emerged, however, the drummer and guitarist of that newly formed band decided to leave to continue their studies. Dexter found a band called Clowns Of Death, where they played Kevin Wasserman (“Noodles”) and Ron Welty. Dexter convinced them to join his band, and so, both left their previous group.

The independent punk label, Nemesis Records, took notice of them to release their self-titled debut album The Offspring.

In 1992, The Offspring had already released their second album, Ignition. Dexter, after graduating, decided to pursue a doctorate at UCLA, but was forced to leave it in the middle, since the success that had come with the third album of the band, Smash, did not allow him to continue studying. An important professor at that university encouraged him to continue studying, telling him that he had a great future in medicine and that he would not put his hands on fire for a rock band.

Dexter went ahead with the group anyway. Dexter counted:

“When we left Smash, we had been a band for ten years, we formed in 1985 just for fun, we did not have a recording contract, we finally signed up for Epitaph in 1992 and then Ignition came out, and when we released Smash things changed very quickly.” We passed that nobody knew us that we met a lot of people. That’s what I remember most about that time. It was an exciting period. “

In 1997 Dexter married Kristine Luna. It is rumored that Alexa’s mother, his daughter, died and that supposedly the song “Gone Away” could have been written in his memory.Dexter got the airplane pilot certificate and has his own.Dexter is the director’s nephew of horror films Tom Holland and cousin of actor Josh Holland, studied at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove (as Greg K and Noodles).

Dexter cites in his influences: Sex Pistols, Ramones, True Sounds Of Liberty, The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Aerosmith, The Clash, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Queen, Van Halen, Social Distortion, Circle Jeks, Agent Orange , UFO, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Black Flag, Descendents, Adolescents and The Police.

Dexter has almost always lived in Orange County, California, lives only a few streets from the houses of Alex Varkatzas (vocalist of Atreyu) and M. Shadows (vocalist of Avenged Sevenfold).

Napster and internet

In the year 2000, Dexter and The Offspring were involved in a series of conflicts created by themselves that cost them several problems with their label, Columbia Records. The controversy jumps when they decided to offer their new album, Conspiracy Of One, free via internet with priority to its initial release date in November. Those who downloaded the album were automatically registered in a contest to be awarded a million dollars (live on MTV on the day of the release of the album).

It was something they were talking about together and they took the idea forward because they felt that they owed something to their fans for the support they had been given. The group wanted to do something that would make people talk about their new album and that would also work on a promotional level. Although at first it seemed that Sony was going to let them carry out their experiment, the lawyers intervened in the matter, because they thought that the album would not be able to be edited for another year. The group wanted to record the album and immediately go on tour to present it, so they reached an agreement with Columbia and finally everything went well, although they had to accept some conditions.

They also had serious problems leading a crusade in favor of Napster, along with bands like Limp Bizkit or Radiohead. Even in the beginning, Dexter and his band even sold merchandising without prior permission from the company. However, instead of denouncing the band of Dexter, they took advantage of the pull, thanked the support and collaborated with the band in the commercialization of products with the Napster logo.
