Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. (born Mount Vernon, New York, December 28, 1954) is an American actor and film director, winner of three Golden Globes, a Prize of Syndicate of Actors, a Tony Award and two Oscars; these for Glory tapes as best supporting actor in 1989, and for Training Day as best leading actor in 2001.
Washington has received critical acclaim from critics throughout his career since his 1977 debut, often portraying real-life characters. Some of them have been: the South African activist Steve Biko in Freedom Cry of 1987, the human rights defender Malcolm X in Malcolm X in 1992, the Canadian boxer Rubin Carter in The Hurricane in 1999, the football coach Herman Boone in Remember the Titans in 2000, the modernist poet Melvin B. Tolson in Great debates of 2007, and the drug trafficker Frank Lucas in American Gangster in 2007, among others. He has frequently collaborated with American producer Jerry Bruckheimer and has worked on numerous occasions with directors Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua and Tony Scott. In 2016 he was honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the 73rd -73rd Golden Globe Awards Ceremony.
In 2002, Washington made his film directorial debut with the biopic Antwone Fisher: The Triumph of the Spirit, his second film, Grandes debates, was released in 2007. His most recent work as director, Fences, was premiered on December 16, 2016 and with him and actress Viola Davis in the lead roles, Fences originated his seventh Oscar nomination as best supporting actor.

He was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York (USA) and is the second of three children of a Pentecostal minister and a Baptist mother, who owns a beauty shop. At the beginning he thought about dedicating himself to medicine, but finally began the career of journalism at Fordham University. During his stay as a counselor at a summer camp he took part in a theater production and became interested in acting. He returned to Fordham that year and studied with Professor Robinson Stone. Later he moved to San Francisco to enroll in the American Theater Conservatory. After an intensive year of study at the ACT, after a brief stop in Los Angeles and leaving the conservatory, he returned to New York to look for work as an actor.
He made his debut in the cinema in 1965, when he was only 11 years old, with a tiny role in the film The Cincinnati Kid, which in Spain was called The King of the Game, where, at the beginning of the film, he plays a coin closer to the wall against Steve McQueen. Later, in 1977 Wilma filmed, and had its first leading role in 1981 with Carbon Copy. In 1987 Denzel Washington played the role of South African black activist Stephen Biko in Cry Freedom (Freedom Scream or Cry Freedom), for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In 1989 he played one of the leading roles in Glory, about the participation of African Americans in the American Civil War, which makes him win the Oscar for best supporting actor.
