Deems Taylor’s Biography

Taylor was born in New York and studied at the University of New York (NYU). At firsthad thought of studying architecture, although with a minimal musical experience, immediately opted for the musical composition. The result was a series of works for orchestra and voice. In 1916 he wrote the cantata The Chambered Nautilus, followed by Through the Looking-Glass (for orchestra) in 1918, achieving public recognition.

Taylor was also a member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of writers, actors and critics who met almost daily from 1919 to 1929 at the Algonquin Hotel.

In 1921 he got a position as a music critic at the New York World, a position he took advantage of when he was claimed by the Metropolitan Opera to suggest a composer to write a new opera. He included his own name and was accepted, resulting in The King’s Henchman, with libretto by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Peter Ibbetson was next in 1929.

Taylor was a promoter of classical music throughout his life, working on its dissemination and as a commentator for the New York Philharmonic. He even appeared in the Walt Disney film entitled 1940’s Fantasy as the film’s master of ceremonies.

Taylor was president of ASCAP for six years.
