Debora Turbeville (Boston, Massachusetts, 1932 – Manhattan, New York, 2013), was an American fashion photographer whose work is a source of inspiration for many artists.
His mother described her many times as “a shy and scary child”. At age 19, with the idea of working in the theater, he moved to New York, but ended up working for designer Claire McCardell (the designer who put the wool sweater on the catwalk). In this city she began her career as fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar (1963) with fashion editor Marvin Israel. It was at this time when he discovered that turning the camera optics all the elements moved to the “world of blur”.
I lived on horseback between New York and Mexico and every year spent a few months in St. Petersburg (Russia) city that inspires Turbeville like no other. In 2002 he received a Fullbright scholarship for a series of lectures on photography at the Baltic School of Photography in Russia. In 2005 she was a professor at the Smolney Institute, also in St. Petersburg. In 2007, she traveled with her camera across Europe, “stealing” precious snapshots of people and places, capturing “realities” that only she can see.
Turbeville died of lung cancer at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan on October 24, 2013.
