Dean Smith’s Biography

He was one of the most successful college basketball coaches in the United States. Basketball Hall of Fame member, Dean Smith is best known for his 36-year college coaching career in the United States at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Smith was a trainer in this institution from 1961 to 1997 where he accumulated 879 victories for his career. During this period Smith managed to win two national championships (1982 and 1993), in addition to numerous conference titles in the ACC. He managed to qualify his team to the NCAA tournament 27 times, including 23 consecutive times. In his 36 seasons, he managed to win 50% of his matches 35 consecutive times. During his career, Smith was very successful in developing players who later had success in the NBA: This list includes: Phil Ford, Walter Davis, Bob McAdoo, James Worthy, Kenny Smith, Brad Daugherty, Sam Perkins, Michael Jordan, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison.

In addition to training players, Dean Smith helped form an impressive list of professional basketball and college coaches: Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown, Doug Moe, Roy Williams, Bill Guthridge, Buzz Peterson, Jeff Lebo, Matt Doherty and Randy Weil.

In 1976, Smith led the United States team and won the gold medal at the Olympics in Montreal.
