Dave Richards (KCB, CBE, DSO) (born in 1952) is a British military officer, was commander of the ISAF in Afghanistan in 2006 and served as the Chief of Defense Staff from the United Kingdom.

Previous training for the commander in Afghanistan

He was commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1971, before studying international relations at the University College of Cardiff graduating in 1974. During the next nine years he was in service in the Far East, Germany and the United Kingdom, including four tours in Northern Ireland. He attended the Staff High School, Camberley in 1984 and was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1994 he was promoted and appointed Colonel of the Army in the plans of the Ministry of Defense, responsible for the shape and size of the Army. Ascended to Brigadier General, he commanded British forces in East Timor in 1999 and Sierra Leone in 2000, his mission in Sierra Leone – during which he persuaded then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Foreign Secretary Robin Cook to allow him to return and execute a larger intervention in which he was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his leadership and “moral courage”. He also became a CBE of the operation when he was in charge in East Timor. and after attending the Superior Command, he became Commander of the 4th Armored Brigade in Germany. In 1998, he was assigned to the Permanent Joint Headquarters as Chief of the Joint Operations Force.

Richards was appointed as Allied Commander of the Rapid Reaction Corps in January 2005, in which he played the role of Commander of 37,000 Stabilization of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF) force between May. of 2006 and February of 2007. His promotion from Division General to General occurred during his stay in Afghanistan. He was elected to the role of “commander-in-chief” of the British forces on earth in February 2008 and his term of service earned him the title of Knight. He commanded 35,000 soldiers from 37 nations in the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in Afghanistan between May 2006 and February 2007, and was the first foreigner since World War II to command US forces.
