David Morrissey’s Biography

David Morrissey was born in Kensington (Liverpool), in 1964. Son of Joe, a shoemaker, and Joan, who worked for the Littlewoods company. David is the youngest of his three brothers, Tony, Paul and Karen.

As a child, he was interested in the cinema, television and musicals of Gene Kelly. After watching Ken Loach’s film Kes (1969) on television, he decided to become an actor.

He attended the St Margaret Mary’s Primary school, where, encouraged by a teacher, he made his first steps in theater, playing Scarecrow in the theater production The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with 11 years.

After completing his high school studies, taken at De La Salle School, he joined the Everyman Youth Theater. This decision proved crucial in his career, and in 1983 he had his first opportunity with the role of Billy Rizley in One Summer, of Channel 4, a youth drama.

After his professional debut, David left Liverpool to study in London, at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1985. After a year in the RADA, Morrissey returned to Liverpool to act in the play WCPC, at the Liverpool Playhouse. Then, with the theater company Cheek by Jowl, he performed in the works El Cid and Noche de reyes, and later spent two years with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), mainly with the director Deborah Warner with whomwork in the play El rey Juan, in 1988. From this interpretation, his participation in the classical theater is common, with the works Enrique IV, Peer Gynt, Much ado about nothing, In a Dark Dark House or Macbeth.

On television, it is common presence in the British series most acclaimed by the public and critics, such as The Storyteller, Our Mutual Friend, Clocking Off, Holding On, State of Play, The Deal, Sense and Sensibility, Doctor Who or Red Riding. In 2012 he played Philip Blake “The Governor” in the AMC series, The Walking Dead, based on the series of comic books of the same name created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.

In film he debuted with Peter Greenaway’s film, Women’s Conspiracy, in 1988. He has subsequently starred in such varied films as Waterland, Being Human, The Commissioner, Hilary and Jackie, The Suicide Club, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin , Without control, Basic instinct 2, The Reaping, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, The Boleyn sisters or Centurion.

The British Film Institute described Morrissey as “one of the most versatile British actors of his generation”.

In addition to his acting career, David has founded his own production company, Tubedale Films, co-producer of Patrice Leconte’s The Man on the Train, starring Johnny Hallyday and Jean Rochefort. Tudedale Films has allowed David to also start in the film direction. After starting with some shorts, David has directed the television project Sweet Revenge, as well as the film Do not Worry About Me, of which he was also a screenwriter.

His wife is the novelist Esther Freud, whom he married in 2006. They have three children: Albie, Anna and Gene.
