David Eric Grohl’s Biography
When Grohl was a teenager, his family moved from Ohio to Alexandria, Virginia, an area of Washington DC. Three years later, his parents divorced and Grohl grew up with his mother. At the age of 12, Grohl started playing the guitar. He tried to take lessons, but soon begins to play in the company of friends. A year later, a summer visit to her cousin’s house grew Grohl’s interest in punk-rock, because his cousin Tracy took him to several concerts that summer.
During the following years, Grohl played in several local bands, including Freak Baby where he played the guitar. When this one separated, it entered a hardcore punk band, called Mission Impossible and one of hardcore / post-punk, called Dain Bramage. Then, he entered as a drummer a hardcore band called Scream. In the years in which he developed as a drummer, Grohl quoted John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Roger Taylor of Queen as his greatest influences, coming to tattoo the logo of three circles (appearing in Led Zeppelin IV) of Bonham on his wrist . The surname Grohl is of Slovak origin. The original surname was Grohol.
Grohl was married to photographer Jennifer Youngblood from 1994 to 1997. Dave Grohl married Jordyn Blum in 2003, with whom he has three daughters: Violet Maye Grohl, born on April 15, 2006, Harper Willow Grohl, born on April 17, 2009 and Ophelia Saint Grohl, born on August 1, 2014.
In 2012, it was estimated that Grohl was the third richest drummer in the world, behind Ringo Starr and Phil Collins, with an approximate fortune of 260 million dollars. In part, because he is a drummer and composer. Grohl is considered by Ken Micallef, co-author of Classic Rock Drummers, as one of the most influential rock musicians of the last 20 years.
Ghohl left high school at the beginning of the eleventh grade. He still does not know how to read a score and writes his music by ear.
At the age of seventeen, Grohl auditioned for the Washington band, D.C. Scream, to cover the vacancy produced by the resignation of drummer Kent Stax. In order to be admitted to the audition, Grohl had lied about his age, saying he was 20 years old. To Grohl’s surprise, the band asked him to join; After hesitating for a brief period, Grohl accepted the offer. Grohl dropped out of high school in his junior year, he said: “I was seventeen and was very anxious to see the world, sodid it.” He recorded a couple of live albums with them (his show on May 4, 1990 in Alzey, Germany was released by Tobby Holzinger in his Choice Live Series Vol.10) and two studio albums, No More Censorship and Fumble, in the one that Grohl wrote and sang in the song “Gods Look Down”.
While playing on Scream, Grohl became a fan of Melvins and eventually became friends with the band. During a stop of the 1990 tour, on the west coast, Buzz Osborne de Melvins took two of his friends, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, to see the band.
In 1990, after the Scream tour, Grohl was part of Nirvana. He recorded with the group Nevermind, In Utero and MTV Unplugged in New York. Dave recorded with Nirvana his most famous album (Nevermind), and developed a great friendship with his peers. The style of playing drums fit just the sound of the band, which is why he is considered “the definitive drummer of Nirvana”. In 1994 after the death of Kurt Cobain and the dissolution of the band, Grohl, along with his friend Greg Dulli, recorded what would be the debut album of the Foo Fighters in just one week.
During the time he was a member of Nirvana, Dave Grohl wrote several songs on his own that did not seem at all according to the sound of that band. For this reason he did not introduce all of them to his peers, and decided to record a demo on his own under the pseudonym Late !, naming the album as Pocketwatch. The edition of this demo was made in barely a hundred cassettes, which Grohl distributed only among his friends and without any pretension to edit it commercially. This is the theme of Color Pictures of a Marigold that was later included in a reissue with Kurt Cobain in the single Heart-Shaped Box.
On March 11, 1997, the first edited album appeared: Touch (it is the second and last solo recording), which is the soundtrack of the film of the same name.
Grohl recorded the album titled “Foo Fighters” in just one week, and all the songs were composed by him and recorded by him. Then he needed to form a band, to make an album tour. For this he went to: Pat Smear (guitar), with whom he had played in Nirvana, Nate Mendel (bass), and William Goldsmith (drums).
Grohl recorded “The Color and the Shape,” “There’s Nothing Left to Lose,” and “One by One,” albums that went on to “Foo Fighters.” During the recording of these discs, the band underwent modifications in the formation, went Pat Smear and William Goldsmith, that were replaced by Chris Shifflet in guitar and Taylor Hawkins in battery.
In the two and a half years that separate him from One By One, the Foo Fighters have not wasted their time. Grohl led Probot, a heavy metal project along with figures such as Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) and King Diamond (Mercyful Fate, King Diamond), as well as playing drums in albums by Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Queens of the Stone Age and British group The Prodigy.
The future of Foo Fighters seemed unpredictable. In press presentations for In Your Honor, Grohl said that could be the last step in the band’s career. Although in other statements said that Foo Fighters could continue for years.
There would be ideas to launch a box-set with b-sides and covers recorded over the ten years that the band has been running, as well as the desire of RCA / BMG to launch a Greatest Hits.
In September 2007 the sixth album went on sale: Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, with a more melodic style as usual and breaker at the same time. They repeat with Gil Norton, producer of The Color and the Shape.
