In 1887, while in Malta as a British Army doctor, he discovered the organism that causes Malt fever and showed that humans contracted this disease by drinking the milk of sick cattle. This organism was Brucella, a group of gram-negative coccobacilli of which four species are pathogenic for humans. The most common symptoms are fever, malaise and headache.Years later, he became a professor at the Netley Navy Medical College for five years, during which he also worked in Robert Koch’s laboratories in Berlin.
In 1895, while studying in South Africa, a livestock disease called nagana discovered the trypanosome, a type of microbe, which was the cause of sleeping sickness in humans.
In subsequent trips to Africa between 1903 and 1911, Bruce and his wife, Mary Steele Bruce, continued to investigate this disease and showed that it is transmitted from animals to humans and from one person to another by means of the tsetse fly. < / p>
