Dave Barry’s Biography
Barry was born in Armonk, New York, where his father, David Barry, Sr., was a Presbyterian pastor. He was educated at Pleasantville High School where he was elected clown of the class in 1965. He graduated in English at Haverford College in 1969.
As the son of a pastor and pupil of a school affiliated with the Quakers, Barry avoided military service during the Vietnam War by registering as a conscientious objector.
Barry and his first wife, Beth, had a son, Robert, in 1980. The Barry divorced in the mid-1990s. In 1996, Barry married the Miami Herald sports journalist Michelle Kaufman; they had a daughter, Sophie, in 2000. They are all mentioned regularly in Barry’s columns, although their divorce was never mentioned. However, the initial encounter and Barry’s courtship with Michelle is generally thought to have been exaggerated in an epilogue to his book Dave Barry in Cyberspace, but with the names changed: Barry introduces himself as’ RayAdverb ‘(an anagram of’ Dave Barry ‘), and Michelle is represented by’ MsPtato ‘.
