He was born in Alençon and lived his childhood between Pau, Dax and Biarritz, in the southwest of France.
He took his first steps in social and political militancy during his time as a high school student, participating actively in the revolts known as May French of 68, in Pau. Coescribe a pamphlet on educational reform and comes to think of becoming a deputy, but soon abandons these ideas to aggiornarse the student and worker movement.
In 1970 he traveled to Paris and joined the band Présence, after some minor experiences with bands of teenagers who played ‘the themes of the moment’ in small venues and parties (Memphis, Shade’s and Reveil among others). Présence takes out two singles that do not get any repercussion and the group dissolves. But the experience helps Balavoine mature musically, after several tours of the province.
In 1972 he released his first single, without success, and shortly after joined as a chorus (with his brother Guy) to La révolution française, a musical comedy mounted at the Palais des Sports. The show had great artists; however, it does not achieve the expected success.
The contacts you achieve in these first experiences end up paying off. In 1974 he becomes chorus of Patrick Juvet, singing the highest notes for him. By those years Juvet was popular in the French musical world, and was about to present his new album Chrysalide. Juvet agreed to include in his album a song by Balavoine, Couleur d’automne. Léo Missir, artistic director of Barclay Records, listens to the single and offers Balavoine a musical contract. In 1975 Balavoine finally decided to edit his own album, De vous à elle en passant par moi (“From you to her passing through me”).
Carried by his crystal voice, he gets to know the success in 1978 with his title Le Chanteur (The Singer) and his role as Johnny Rockfort in the rock opera Starmania.
During the years that follow, Balavoine divides his time between recordings (with several albums released at a rate that does not match the little success they obtained), the Paris-Dakar, charity events, children’s shows and humanitarian aid to Mali and other African countries (both with their music and with their active presence in the most affected countries of the black continent).
The year 1986 Daniel returns to Paris-Dakar, this time for purely humanitarian reasons. On January 14, during an aerial reconnaissance helicopter, Daniel Balavoine dies – along with the pilot and the rest of the crew – when the aircraft crashes in the vicinity of Tumbuktú.
