Dan Rather Short Bio

Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. (October 31, 1931) is an American journalist best known for being the news anchor of CBS Evening News. He is now the editor and presenter of Dan Rather Reports magazine on the AXS TV channel.

Rather was the host of CBS Evening News for 24 years, from March 9, 1981 to March 9, 2005. He also contributed to 60 Minutes on CBS. He became embroiled in controversies over a disputed news story about the service of President George W. Bush during the Vietnam War in the National Guard and later left CBS Evening News in 2005. He then left the network completely, in 2006 , after 43 years of work.

Along with Peter Jennings on ABC News and Tom Brokaw on NBC News, Rather was one of the “Big Three” news anchors of the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. All three hosted the evening news programs most important of its network for more than 20 years, and all three began and retired in less than a year.
