Damien_Chazelle’s Biography

First years

Chazelle is the son of Celia Martin, a writer and teacher, and the French computer scientist Bernard Chazelle. Dedicating himself to the cinema was his earliest ambition, however when he was in high school he trained as a jazz drummer at Princeton High School. There he met his drum teacher, who had a strong character and was the inspiration to create the character of Terence Fletcher, in Whiplash. Although he cultivated his love for music, Chazelle says he knew he did not have the talent to be a great musician, so after high school he returned to film, which he describes as his first love.

He went to Harvard University where he graduated in Visual and Environmental Studies.

Chazelle’s debut as a screenwriter and director was in the movie Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench; where he had Justin Hurwitz as an original music composer, a duo that stays with the next two films of the director.

He shared the script work with director Ed Gass-Donnelly in the film The Last Exorcism Part II, 2013. He also wrote the screenplay for Grand Piano 2013, a thriller in which a pianist is threatened with death during a concert . Chazelle says in interviews that even though he worked as a screenwriter he always wanted to direct his own screenplay.

The movie with which Chazelle began his recognition was Whiplash; at first the producers rejected the script, even so it appeared in the Black List of 2012 (a list where the best scripts without producing are found) as one of the best films without doing of that year. Finally it was accepted by the producers, among them Helen Estabrook, who proposed J.K. Simmons for the role of professor, Terence Fletcher.

To obtain the film’s budget, a short film was first made as a test, which won applause at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Whiplash won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize; at the Sundance Festival, in the category of American drama feature films. It even earned him Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and was Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing and Best Sound.

In 2016 La La Land arrives from Lionsgate; a film that tells the story of Mia and Sebastian, two dreamers who seek to achieve their dreams in film and music. Chazelle received great recognition from the press and audience, and even some magazines gave it the name of “The 2016 Movie”. In January 2017 the Academy announces the nominees for the Oscar, La La Land is nominated for 14 awards, being the third film in history to have this number. Best Film, Best Direction, Best Music, Best Song, Best Actress and Best Actor are some of the nominated categories.

At the Oscars, La La Land gets 6 awards from the 14 nominations obtained, among them Best Song, Soundtrack and Actress, including the Director, becoming the youngest to achieve so far.
