Damian Watcyn Lewis , OBE (St. John’s Wood, London, February 11, 1971) is an English actor and producer who won the Golden Globe.
He is best known for his roles as Sergeant Nicholas Brody in the Homeland series, Major Richard Winters in the HBO Emmy Award-winning miniseries, Brothers of Blood (Band of Brothers) and Soames Forsyte in the miniseries of the ITV, The Forsyte Saga. He also starred as Detective Charlie Crews in the NBC series, Life, canceled in May 2009.
He was educated at Ashdown House and Eton College. During his childhood he made several trips to the United States in the summers to visit his relatives, and also to Spain, where he has been many times. He studied Spanish at school.
After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1993, under the teachings of Professor Colin McCormack, he participated as an actor in the Royal Shakespeare Company. During this time in the RSC, he played Borgheim in The Boy Eyolf of Ibsen, a production by Adrian Noble, and Leonato Posthumous in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. He also participated in another work of Ibsen, the columns of society.
Lewis worked in the production of Hamlet by Sam Mendes, playing Laertes with Ralph Fiennes in the role of Hamlet. This production was seen by Steven Spielberg, who would then choose him to play Richard Winters in the HBO / BBC World War II miniseries, Band of Brothers, his first role of several that required a credible American English accent. < / p>
Subsequently, Lewis played Soames Forsyte in the ITV series, The Forsyte Saga, with which he received good reviews and would be made known to the American public.
He returned to the United States to star in 2001 The Dreamcatcher, a movie based on a Stephen King novel about a man who is possessed by an evil extraterrestrial. His character is American but when he is possessed he changes the accent to British English, which required Lewis to alternate between both accents.
He played Jeffrey Archer in the satirical television special Jeffrey Archer: The Truth. Since 2004 he has continued to appear in several films, as well as in the 2005 adaptation of the BBC’s William Shakespeare comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, as part of the ShakespeaRe-Told season.
He played the role of Yassen Gregorovich in the movie Stormbreaker.
In 2006 he also participated in the Stephen Poliakoff drama for the BBC, Friends and Crocodiles.
Since 2007, Lewis has starred in the United States in the NBC series, Life, which premiered on September 26, where he plays a police officer accused of murder and imprisoned for twelve years in prison, from 1995 to 2007, before be exonerated.
In 2008, he appears in the lead role of a film called The Baker, directed by his brother, Gareth Lewis, and in Rizza’s supporting role in The Escapist, which he also produces.
In 2010 he joined Showtime’s new Homeland series (TV series) in which he plays Nicholas Brody, a US Marine sergeant who had been reported missing in action in 2003 and who was rescued in 2011 during a raid by the Seal Force in the area of terrorist leader Abu Nazir. His character is investigated by the CIA on suspicion that he has joined the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. With Homeland he won the Golden Globe for best actor in TV series – Drama 2013.
He married actress Helen McCrory on July 4, 2007 and has a daughter, Manon (born September 2006), and a son, Gulliver (born November 2007). Currently residing in Tufnell Park. A well-known Liverpool supporter, he has been seen singing the “Torres Bounce” at The Albert Pub, before the first match of the semi-final between Liverpool and Chelsea in the 2008 edition of the Champions League.
